Celeste is one of the most satisfying platformers released in recent memory. And a big part of that is due to the tight and responsive controls of the game’s main character: Madeline. In this video, let’s look at how designers Maddy Thorson (Matt at the time of recording the video) and Noel Berry made the hero of Celeste feel so good to play.

The devs acknowledging that sometimes you just have to be willing to throw away ideas is one of the most important Things. I know it feels bad to not use an idea that is technically good, but it just doesnt work for the game you're making. Never try to brute-force in such elements, it will poison the entire experience

A minor point also is the levels are set up so that when you die you don't have to wait for things to align. You can start running immediately after death and in almost every case the obstacles will be aligned to allow you to progress, no waiting.

I honestly find the movement in celeste to be clunky and unsatisfying. It’s probably just me, but i don’t find celeste’s movement to be praiseworthy. I’d rather have hollow knight’s “fluid” movement that may be imprecise, but it feels satisfying moving and jumping around. What amazes me about celeste is the level and puzzle design, it’s probably the best platformer out there in terms of puzzle designs. Some levels are just so smart and utilizes the game mechanics to the fullest.
23 dager sidenDoge McDogeface
@Iceling bolt nope, i bought it directly from steam. I never knew that they made it clunky for pirated versions. But it’s probably just my preference, the jumping animation just feels too solid for me. Maybe i got too used to playing hollow knight and i struggled getting into celeste because the style’s different, but who knows.
17 timer sidenIceling bolt
Are you playing the pirated version? They intentionally made that one clunky

Maybe celeste is a good game, but its overuse of screen shake is a total showstopper for me. Can developers start NOT overusing it please ?
Måned sidenNeonSuspenders
@Revive Back Hey, I'm with ya. It drives me nuts in Nuclear Throne lol.
29 dager sidenRevive Back
@NeonSuspenders Yeah but that sucks too. I want a reasonable use of it, when it make sense, eg. explosions, earthquake, big spell effects... in most games it seems to happen everywhere for no reason other than "oh we developed a screen shake algorithm so we need to overuse it^1000"

Måned sidencalfromkansas
@LOL Game King Big disagree with you on calling Hollow Knight underrated. It has "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews on Steam, with around 115,000 reviews in total. I mean, I disagree with the other guy, too. Hollow Knight's an amazing game, deserves all the praise it gets, and if that dude hasn't played it, he's missing out. But calling it "underrated" is a stretch. It was nominated for a bunch of award, won several, and made a good number of Best of 2017 lists from various publications.

meat boy's physics feel off, but when you get the swing, it feels quite nice. the high hang time makes you feel you could jump the world(don't try), and his slow acceleration combined make his controls tough to get used to, but feel nice to play. after all, super meat boy _is_ a game about mastering the tough to master controls, then finding how to use them to your advantage in stupidly annoying situations

I love Celeste, I very rarely try to 100% a game and do all the extras, but in this I put a lot of effort into getting strawberries, crystal hearts, b sides and the Core even after finishing the main game. I didn't end up doing it because for how great the game is my single complaint is that I find the Golden feathers borderline impossible to control and not fun. Still, that's a way higher hit rate than any game I've played in years. Great game and another great video, Mark. I always enjoy your insight.

Celeste is easily one of my all-time favorite games, to the point where I got all the golden strawberries, but thinking about celeste from a developer's point of view, why on earth did they not scrap the feather mechanic? It just doesn't work, and is weirdly control scheme dependent unlike anything else

One point I feel the need to contend. You said that they made a sacrifice in terms of character detail, but I think that blocky pixel-art is actually a good choice for platformers because it more closely represents the mechanics. Also player: tries to jump 3 frames before touchdown Celeste: Madeline will remember that.

I really liked that section about mechanical forgiveness, and the intention of not wanting to feel your button input got eaten by the game!
4 måneder sidenEtheo
The point about working off of the player's intent instead of their frame-precision skill is an EXCELLENT one. It honest elevates the game to be so much more than just a platformer and helps solve unnecessary frustration. I wish more game developers thought like this. It should be a core principle in game design.

I couldn't stand the interview with the developers. They can't decide when something is something or it isn't but it's like something else. They talk in comparatives with the comparison being with the original statement. Like you know what I mean, that it's like what I mean. Not a confident statement of anything between them.

Not sure why people liked this game so much. I played through half of it and just didn't get the appeal. The whole cutesy soft pastel and forced retro styling is over done these days.
4 måneder sidenironminer93
As usual, its your own opinion, many people either fall into this game due to enjoying platformers such as mario, whilst some can relate to madeline's depression and anxienty. Not to mention its casual friendly, something you'd do when you have the time too.
3 måneder sidenBowtie Productions
The gameplay is incredible, the artstyle, while simple, accomplishes a lot, and the story is nothing short of amazing. Madeline is so relatable, and the story of her not simply overcoming but learning to accept and quite literally work with her insecurities and anxieties is simply moving, not to mention a very original and interesting take on dealing with depression and anxiety, through Badeline. Give it another try, you won't regret it. And if you dismiss it on the artstyle alone... that's just sad.

Man I left playing MAFIA 3 because of its stupid movement of cars. I always feel I am moving it with the handbreaks on. It doesn move a simple driving order the natural way. And it claims it has SIMULATION of a car! Fuck it! Mafia III had the most eyecatching human movements but the worst car movements. Sad to see a fucked great potential. So the first part of your movement logics is very important. It can make ur game damned.
4 måneder sidenJoseph G
You can tell the game is shit when the development team have pronouns in their bio
4 måneder sidenBowtie Productions
Because god forbid that non-binary people exist or be allowed to succeed. Are you seriously judging a game before you've even played it because on of the developers is non-binary? Or are you just pissy about people clarifying their pronouns? Rethink your priorities.
