Why did Smeagol and Deagol lose their minds after a few moments in the presence of the ring, when Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Merry and Pippin were able to deal with it for so long?

2 dager siden
Danny
Danny

My idea is that the ring lay lost for so long that it exerted greater power than usual as if it was relieved to be found and guaranteed its survival by not being just some ring they found. It could just be that Smeagol's particular family line was too simple and weak-willed to withstand the rings influence.

Sauron was always under the dark sway of Melkor but bided his time and gained knowledge to then show Melkor that he was more than worthy of that high position in his ranks. What better way than to mingle with the future enemy to gain a better understanding and use that to earn further favour with his overlord, also it could be that it was Melkor's intent for Sauron to follow that path for that same reason of insider understanding.

Having read all of JRR Tolkien’s books, all of Christopher Tolkien’s books, and many allied books, I’m drenched in Tolkien lore. And as an amateur linguist, I very much appreciate your presentation. ... that said, perhaps because it is as fully yet realized in cinema, I find the first and second ages, specifically Beleriand much more interesting than Middle Earth.

They are more likely to hire a gender studies professor if recent developments in tv and movies are anything to go by. I have a feeling they will take liberties with the lore despite there being a plethora of reference texts to go off, look at what they did in The Hobbit with that weird inserted fan-fiction love triangle of Legolas, Kili and Tauriel.

One biblical interpretation does state the same thing about satan that Tolkien did. Mentioning that since God casts satan out of heaven and to earth he has a bit more power on earth than God in heaven until the revelation when God ultimately wins. Which is why so much pain exists on earth even if you believe and worship in God. Satan still is corrupting until the end.

My question to Dr. Olsen is this: Given Tolkien's experience with the horrors of WW1 and WW2, what do you think about the argument that Tom Bombadil is "God," either consciously (or perhaps even unconsciously) as far as Tolkien is concerned? A being powerful enough to see The One Ring as a curious trinket, but for whatever reason, doesn't destroy it or otherwise help in any meaningful way to clean up the mess that is Sauron and this Ring. With a wave of his hand, he could save so much suffering, but doesn't do so. Might have Tolkien put Bombadil in the story as an indictment of God's abandonment of humans and earth in the face of WW1 and WW2? (This despite his professed and at least public "deep faith" in God, and Christian allegory and symbolism strewn throughout his literary works ?.....) .

SMEAGOL QUESTIONS!! Smeagol is my favorite LOTR character and I have a few questions about him. Does anyone know what Smeagol did between the events of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings? In this 60 year period, why did Smeagol seem to not age after having the ring the way Bilbo aged after he had the ring? I understand that Smeagol had the ring for about 500 years and Bilbo had it for around 60 years. On another note, I understand that Aragorn captured him at one point during this time. Also, did Smeagol possibly kill Frodo's parents in search of the ring? I understand that they drowned/died in a river when Frodo was young, who was born 9 years after the events of The Hobbit. This would make sense as Smeagol was a water hobbit and described as a "clever waterman" in the extended film version of the Fellowship by Aragorn himself.

Couldnt the colour of the wizards be referance to the archetypal symbolism within Judeochristian world views? Grey traditionally being the sign of wisdom (the Bible talks about grey hair being "a crown of splendour, attained through the way of righteousness"). White symbolizes purity, and holiness (to be set apart for a significant purpose, and completely void of evil/corruption). Brown of course, the colour of Earth. Who knows how many more there could be 🤔
