On the Dunkirk bit, I would guess that they were going for the metaphor over reality. A damaged, knocked out war machine managing to just barely land and survive. A successful failure. E.g., a metaphor for the British military at Dunkirk

This was great! I loved how Vincent was super knowledgeable but also gave the unrealistic scenes the benefit of the doubt. He was funny and so easy to watch! Would love to see him on VF again

I loved Iron Eagle in the 80s, but as I got older, I realized how hokey it was. Also saw he has magic fuel and rounds - fuel goes down, then up, then down again. Not a pilot, but pretty sure the sudden loss and addition of a few thousand pounds is going to affect the flight characteristics of the bird

For Independence Day, the character Russel K was originally supposed to be flying his crop duster with a missile strapped to it. That’s why his plane flies odd in the movie.

So pilots have survival vests for crashing, with tools etc. But do they have seeds to plant? In my vast experience as a survival game gamer (I mostly cheat a lot) , it has become clear to me that eventually you will have to start a farm to survive.

During your commentary on the movie " True Lies", you stated F-22's being in the movie "Iron Eagle" (at 10:06)...; there were no F-22's shown nor mentioned anywhere in the movie "Iron Eagle". That movie came out in the mid 80's. I would though like to know which movie you really meant. :) Semper Fi.

Erm excuse me Yankee. Have you ever flown a spitfire?? I doubt it. Anyway, at the Dunkirk movie premiere in my town I happened to be sat next to a WW2 airforce veteran and I asked him if that would be possible and he told me that Spitfires had surprisingly good gliding capabilities because the people who designed and built them anticipated attacks would cause the engines to fail and so the pilot would need to glide. So Mr Murican Air Force pilot who thinks he knows it all. You’re WRONG!

Skulls Ain't Dead
Skulls Ain't Dead

Yeah that also stuck out to me, but because its exceedingly common in war to have too few pilots vs aircraft. In WWII, 60% of RAF operational aircrews were killed. Its fairly easy to manufacture planes and pretty difficult to produce skilled pilots (you can make a plane in days but good pilots take years to train). Always destroy the plane in favour of saving the pilot, they are much more valuable.

29:12 Spitfire flaps don’t partly extend, they’re either retracted or fully deployed.. & Ditching a Spit was never a great idea if you had options, they tended to flip and sink quick! I agree though, the extended glide scene was a bit silly.. In addition, the model they burned at the end could have been more accurate. Seeing the metal pole that held the prop on was obvious..

"Can a fighter jet fly straight up? The F/A - 18 has a thrust to weight ratio which is greater than 1-to-1. This means that the engines produce more thrust than the weight of the plane in certain situations. This means that it can keep flying up vertically, as long as the air supply to the engines does not reduce significantly." Good fake pilot.

4 måneder siden
André B. Saba
André B. Saba

the F-18 does NOT have that ratio, its 0.93, so its physically impossible to maintain vertical flight with constant speed, so the pilot with 25 years of experience was right obviously

André B. Saba

Fun fact: the original end of ID4 had Randy Quaid's character show up in his Stearman with a missile duct-taped to the side. He then proceeds to fly into the mother ship as shown. Audience reaction was poor as it was an obvious suicide move, so they took the already finished shot of a Stearman flying slowly into the ship and changed it to an F/A-18. The miracles of CGI. If you look closely you'll see Quaid's ship jink back & forth dodging alien fire in a way unlike how a Hornet moves but consistent with how a biplane would. I hope this explains the odd physics of this scene..

1:40 What? That's *NOT "chaff"* , they were flares !!!!! I can't believe he couldn't even get that right!!! What next? "Rabbits can''t talk, what is this cartoon doing? Who is this Bugs Bunny person?" Oh god! Not Iron Eagle lol ... NSO - probably for the nuclear bomb (B61) that it could carry ... These were Israeli planes, after all !!! The Spitfire ... lol ... The glide ratio for the Spitfire is around 13:1, so every 13ft forwards is one ft down ... so at 1,000 feet of altitude, you could glide for 13,000 feet, or 2.5 miles. The only real issue is the flaps, they would only be down when landing, and not with a dead engine while flying. The MAJOR issue is the flying past the troops was OBVIOUSLY a radio controlled model, it was going far too fast for a real plane.
