Actually, the difference between Oolacile's sorceries and Vinheim's (and most others), is that Oolacile's manipulate light: create illusions, achieve a degree of invisibility, reverse time (which is deeply intertwined with light). Meanwhile, other schools of sorceries are used to manipulate souls: soul arrow, soul spear, crystals having a connexion with the soul. When Dusk says that her land's sorceries are less self-centered, she means that they don't play with one's soul, at least not directly.

My only question is about the speculation on Reah's dialog about "punishment" I always thought she was referring to her escorts which were her friends from school and went hollow while in the catacombs. Also, Petrus's dialog implies that her family name is the only thing giving Reah worth. I dont see how his comments could mean that her name was mud, seeing as it seems that (at least to Petrus) her family name gives her her worth. I suppose it could mean that she isnt worth his time without her family name, implying that he wants her dead because of it. However it seems to me very unlikely. I did really enjoy the video tho and fully believe most of the information within. This is really the only confusion I have about it.

29 dager siden
JarJar Binks
JarJar Binks

the punishment she speaks of could be referring to either her father's occultic acts or because she blames herself for what happened to her friends, maybe it's both these things combined that make her feel as if she deserves to be punished. I interpreted Petrus dialogue as him saying she isn't worth anything now that her family name has been tarnished, but I guess you could interpret it as him saying without her family name she's worthless; meaning her family name hasn't been damaged and therefore she couldn't be related to Havel. Then again why would she be sent on such a suicidal mission if she was from a still respected bloodline.

49:10 If Ceasless is the child of the Witch of Izalith and the Nameless blacksmith deity than wouldnt that mean that Quelana couldn't have left before chaos pyromancies were "discovered/invented". Because she obviously left after the birth of Ceaseless but if Jeremiah was exiled from Izalith before Ceaseless' birth then how did Quelana not know any Chaos Pyromancies if Jeremiah did in spite of the fact that he left earlier. (At least if you beleive that the Witch and the Smith deity found each other after or because they were cheated on by Jeremiah and Fina respectively)

I know Logan says it, but I'm unconvinced that the dragons are from where Seath got the Primordial Crystal. Why would they have it, honestly? They're immortal without it. Much more likely to me is that the Primordial Crystal was stolen from Manus' pendant, with a tip-off from one of the Primordial Serpents. It explains the broken pendant, the DLC item, on a crystal golem in the Archives, the presence of Crystal Golems in Darkroot Basin, the presence of a Moonlight Butterfly in the Darkroot Garden, the presence of a chimaeric guardian and animated scarecrow servants in the past, and the entire motivation for the defilement of Manus' grave--as "a toothy serpent told us to" isn't really an intrinsic motivation.

Måned siden
rohiogerv22
rohiogerv22

Sure. I don't think Seath "invented" light magic, I think it's probably just what everyone, including Seath, was using before Seath discovered soul magic. I went back and watched the video, though, and it's interesting that "and Seath, who betrayed his own" is basically part of a montage of explaining the Lords' powers (Gwyn's Lightning, the Witch's Flame, Nito's Miasma, and Seath's... betrayal), almost like he didn't have any offensive magic to speak of at that time. With mushroom folk, you have an Oolacilian precedent in Elizabeth. I think the Occam's Razor in the case of the tree people is that it's way more likely that they are a devolution of the enemy with which they share a striking resemblance and item drops, rather than that in the years between, sentient tree people spontaneously came into existence. I agree though that it's probably unfair to count manserpents and discount demons as chimaeric. I guess my only defense there is that the game is usually pretty good about calling Demons what they are. In regards to the pendant, I can't really make heads or tails of the thumbnail for the Broken Pendant. Yeah, the remaining bit of stone we can see is red, and that raises further questions because I don't know that I recognize a stone like that in the game. But I was more suggesting that the pendant was broken to take the crystal OUT of it, rather than that the entire pendant was the crystal. Keep in mind, my concept of what the primordial crystal actually is is MUCH smaller than yours. I'm not saying I can definitely prove that the little glint is "the crystal" for all meaningful intents, but I do think having this massive crystal structure, and having it all be spawned from a tiny crystal suspended in a brittle heartstring is exactly the kind of irony FromSoft loved to do in this game, and when it really comes down to it, that little glint is the only thing you actually have to destroy to render Seath mortal.

@rohiogerv22 I don't even know if Seath fought in the war against the dragons. He is just said to have revealed their weakness, and only appears in the intro when the dragons are dead. And the thing about Oolacilian magic is that as far as we know, there are no offensive spells. Also, oolacilian magic doesn't seem to have been created by Seath. Since it is based on light, it seems like it derives from Gwyn and his family's powers. I think Gwyndolin was the one who taught them that kind of magic, since he is a sorcerer and there are statues of him in Oolacile holding an oolacilian catalyst. I agree with you that the scarecrows look like they are animated by magic, and if I recall correctly so are the oolacilian stone guardians. But it doesn't seem like the same applies to other creatures like the mushrooms or the living trees. About the Sanctuary Guardians and Seath, my point was just that they were put there by the gods to protect the sanctuary. Since Seath was an ally to the gods, I agree that he is probably the one who made them, like the gargoyles. However, it should be said that if you count the manserpents as chimeric, then capra and taurus demons should count too, since they are too a mix of an animal and a human. I just don't see any relation between Manus and the primordial crystal. The pendant is explicitly said to be made of stone, not crystal. And that stone is red, while crystals are always blue (at least in DS1, in DS3 there are purple and black ones).

4 dager siden
rohiogerv22
rohiogerv22

Let me clarify on the ecosystem of Oolacile point then. The way I see it, the creatures in (at that point) the Royal Wood all seem to have been deliberately "animated" to do work, in a Sorcerer's Apprentice kind of way. You have laborers and guardians, tending and protecting the land for Oolacile. In my mind at least, the tree people of later Darkroot are actually "nature-reclaimed" scarecrows, still retaining the property of being magically animated, but with their wood and straw rotted and replaced by grass and vines over time. And my point about the Sanctuary Guardian is that it's heavily chimaeric. Gwyn doesn't deal much in chimaeric beings, Nito deals in skeletons, and the demons from the chaos flame, while referencing animal life, tend to draw from a single animal, in addition to being fire-oriented. Seath is the one who creates and distributes chimaeric beings, and, in the case of the manserpents, has already demonstrated a proclivity for imbuing lightning in hybrid beings where that might seem counterintuitive. I think the point about the differences in types of magic is a good counterargument, but not irreconcilable. What if we presume that, near the dawn of the Age of Fire, Seath wasn't into Soul Magic yet. I don't believe we actually see him fight with it in the intro cutscene, and the "sneaky" Light magic makes a lot of sense with his characterization at the time. It's possible that the discovery of the primordial crystal itself led to his research into soul magic, perhaps re-discovered from Primeval Man in some way. Dusk even says something about how soul magic is so rigid and concrete, compared to the light magic of her time which is just sort of a vague suggestion. Maybe that's a consequence of the thousands of hours Seath has spent in the archives, which he hadn't yet spent back in those days. This paragraph in particular though is all speculation with no evidence, so I wouldn't take it seriously. It's just a demonstration of how the game doesn't tie Seath down as much as it seems to.

4 dager siden
StephanuSneed
StephanuSneed

@rohiogerv22 I always assumed the crystal was the whole thing since it's all made of crystal and you break the whole thing. As to why the dragons would have it while not needing it, it's just a matter of being at the right place at the right time: the crystal being primordial implies it has existed since the beginning of time (i.e the First Flame). Crystals are after all stone imbued with the power of disparity. Maybe the crystal was a stone being hit with the full force of the FF in its first moments, gaining the power to grant eternal life or disparity. The dragons have existed in some form since before the FF, so it would make sense they actually found it first, or even that it formed in their domain. We see they seemed to inhabit the lower world (what we now call Ash Lake), and the FF appeared there, or at least close. Seath being the duke of Oolacile is actually a good idea, and he obviously has a presence there, however, there are a few problems. First, he obviously doesn't live in there, which doesn't disprove the theory but makes it harder to prove. Second, Oolacile already has a princess, which implies it has a royal family,. And if I recall correctly, the title for the heir of a duke is marquis, not princess. Admittedly, fromsoft could have called her a princess to simplify things I guess, and no other member of the royal is mentioned. And Seath created the lady with the crucifix in Ringed City, so he has a history of doing that kind of stuff. Third, the kind of magic that Seath and people directly related to him use is different from the one used in Oolacile. It's based on soul and crystal, not light. Fourth, while he has a big presence in Oolacile in modern times, he has none during the DLC, when the place was actually functional and he would be ruling it. That's why I think whatever interest he has in the place developed recently. And one of the most striking things about the place is the hydra, which is surrounded by his golems. The fact that those same golems also carry the pendant and Dusk, while the hydra not being present in the DLC makes me think that while he was moving the hydra into the recently formed Bassin, the golems accidentally found Oolacilian stuff there. Oolacile in general is a really strange place. Gwyndolin has a big presence there, he has a lot of statues, and the place is implied to have had influence in the Ringed City. I will be honest with you. I'm not sure to what extent we should take the DLC as canon to the main game. FromSoft and specifically Miyazaki's games have a history of having their DLCs wildly retconning stuff from their main games. That has happened in Ringed City, Ariandel, and the Old Hunters. They start developing them with the objective of completing the stories and world-building of the main games they couldn't finish for the game's release, but then they spiral into their own things.

4 dager siden
rohiogerv22

What makes you conclude that the crystal is massive? The actual thing that you break to make Seath vulnerable is an incredibly tiny glint held together by a sort of "heartstring" between two segments of crystal. My point is that Seath's presence is all over Darkroot, which you seem to agree with. What is Seath the Duke of, and why not Oolacile, the place connected with early magic? When Kaathe tempted the New Londians, he didn't say "hey you should go check out this specific grave, it's got cool shit inside." There's contextual evidence that he basically did in the case of Oolacile. And ultimately, if you were designing this game, why would you put the DLC item on a Crystal Giant in the Duke's Archives? What even is the Broken Pendant, what was in it before it was broken, why is it in the Archives, and why is it significant to Manus? I think you're falling into the trap of tying everything into the "plot against the gods" arc and handwaving everything else as just being a byproduct of that. That arc IS important, but perhaps least so compared to anywhere else when it comes to Oolacile.

I don't know if this is related at all to the Chloranthy/Green Flower imagery, but The Ringed City DLC of DS3 went absolutely nuts with the young grass motif such as is found on the Grass Crest Shield, which was previously unexplained in DS1. It's found absolutely everywhere in the Ringed City, along with Filianore's crest which is plainly stated to be formed of young grass. We also see the Grass Crest patterning on the Harald Knight Curved Greatsword (inbetween spots of corrosion), though it's unknown how much they knew of Filianore before they set out for the dark soul as their gear states. They must have known at least something of the Ringed City if they knew where to find the dark soul, so it seems possible to me they adorned not their shields and armor, but their weapons, with Filianore's symbol, because they planned to make the two to meet. Why her crest is specifically "young" grass is easy to imagine - she is called Gwyn's youngest, has a youthful appearance, and has (still not totally understood) time-withholding - or "anti-aging" - powers. We have a potential link between the young grass crest and the green flower symbol in the green blossoms of each game, which always note they are a green weed that grows in the shape of a flower. This common herb occurs and is enjoyed throughout the ages and could certainly be the "green flower" that the Blacksmith Deity loves so much. Considering the architectural intricacies of the Ringed City I think it's incredibly likely that the N.B.S.D. built it, in addition to Anor Londo. Aside from a crown, what is Gwyn bestowing upon the Hollow in the statue just before the Church of Filianore? The Chloranthy Ring +3. I could not even attempt to explain the presence of this ring at all until my 3rd playthrough of the DLC and probably my 50th watchthrough of this video. Is it worth mentioning that Chloranthy is the process of flower material on a plant reverting to green leafy material? It's defined as a retrograde metamorphosis - this is basically a mature part of a plant reverting to something associated with youth, growth, and nourishment, instead of reproduction. Easy to see why it helps restore stamina. Less easy to see is why it is the N.B.S.D.'s signature symbol. For a bonus piece of wild speculation - note that Midir's arena's background is clearly the setting of Ash Lake/the DS1 intro cinematic. Is it possible that the Ringed City was the N.B.S.D.'s final task before being beheaded and disposed of, for some unknown reason? Is it possible that Midir, raised by the gods and tasked with consuming the dark, is the Young Ancient Dragon found in Ash Lake in DS1? I'm positive someone has suggested this last one before.
