Clickbait Title: Is There Proof We Really Are The Center of the Universe?!
Shortly before the election my cat escaped the house and got her belly covered in sticky mud which then picked up all sorts of junk. During the extremely needed bath, which she hates, I lost control of her head and she managed to latch onto my arm and break the skin with two teeth. It looked kinda rough, so I figured I should get a tetanus shot in the morning. By the time the clinic opened I was in some of the worst pain of my life, the swollen bite looked like a tennis ball was embedded inside my arm, and the selling was pressing constantly against my ulnar nerve. The pressure was so intense that I could feel gravity pulling on my skin and fingers. Anyway, that's a big part of why this is late.

There's something hilarious about the fact that Galileo wasn't heavily persecuted for heliocentrism, and the main reason people didn't believe in heliocentrism is that there was no evidence for it before the invention of optics (and the lack of observable stellar parallax without the use of optics was evidence against heliocentrism), but someone became so enamored with the heavily fictionalized version of events that they are unironically defending what was, basically, a straw man argument--and ignoring science and the Church to do it.

I never understood why the flat earth and geocentrists feel that the existence of life on earth being an accident/result of big bang/evolution makes it insignificant. I think that one lonely space rock along millions around us being the only one to host life as we know it, to have such varied and complex life forms while those around us are just boiling/freezing rocks and gas balls... I think it's actually very significant and kind of divine in its own way. It doesn't make any difference to me where we are in all that.

I'm not sure what the "targets" of this video are proposing, but IF a Creator God made the Earth (and us), and the rest of the "cosmos" was generated for us to perceive ("Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth") then the "mass-centric" notion of centrality would be . . immaterial ; )

Just a thought; if both position and movement is relative, wouldnt the heliocentric model and this specific geocentric model be exactly the same? It just uses different centres, but all the movement of the planets relative to each other stays the same, right?

It’s so weird to me that people would need to put us at the center to be special since the earth is pretty special. We ended up in the “goldielocks zone” where life can actually happen. I mean, at least 8 other big losers and several smaller loser planets couldn’t do that in our solar system alone.

Yeah... they were "duped" but Lawrence Krauss, Max Tegmark, and Kate Mulgrew are very intelligent and media savvy. They have people that help them with this stuff and should have known better. In the case of Krauss, maybe, he's not the person he projects himself to be? In 2018 he was forced out of his prestigious professorship at ASU after multiple sexual harassment allegations. He has also had a long association with Jeffery Epstein, accepting large grants from Epstein and even defending Epstein when things first started to get weird. (see https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix/2019/07/12/former-asu-physicist-lawrence-krauss-got-250-k-jeffrey-epstein/1718659001/) At the very least this indicates a serious lack of judgment, and perhaps a lot worse.

OK, paying lip service to the obvious is counter productive. Actually wasting time trying to reason with a Flat Earther makes very little sense. If they had the capability to reason in any significant way they wouldn't be Flat Earthers. Go out and talk to a tree. Your time will be better spent. It's all a belief system with these people anyway, no logic involved. You will achieve World peace before you'll convince them of anything.

I just don’t understand the correlation between geocentricism and religion. The heliocentric model does not exclude religion or a belief in god. Regardless of which model is the “correct one”, like, what does that really do for you? You’re still going to have atheists, gays, trans, Jews, etc. It doesn’t prove god exists either so what do you think you’re gaining from this? Regardless of where the earth “stands”, it is still pretty significant and amazing and wondrous. It’s the only place we can live dumbass!!! Even if there are livable planets out there, Earth would still be unique. I just don’t get why these things have to be mutually exclusive depending on what you believe?

I think some folx elsewhere in the comments managed to pick it out: these folks don't want to prove that "we", all people living on Earth, are special - they want to prove that "we", reactionary authoritarian Christians like themselves, are special, and do so _without also proving_ that Jews, homosexuals, liberals, and every other person they want to call inferior is special. And if their God has arbitrarily chosen Earth to be a special place, their God can also have arbitrarily chosen _them_ to be special among those on Earth. I don't know why people want to invest so much energy in justifying their bigotry but I think that's what they're doing.

Libertarianism has nothing against multiculturalism. I know you first specified that it’s certain corners of libertarianism, but those people are authoritarians who want liberty for themselves and people who look like them, but not for anyone else. That means they aren’t libertarians. These people are just racist conservatives or oligarchs who like the name libertarian, but have no clue what it means. Libertarians do oppose large countries, but it has nothing to do with the threat of multiculturalism.

What annoys me about those who believe in geocentrism is they claim that the bible is the main form of evidence for it, and yet the bible doesn't actually say anything that could be directly taken to mean the sun revolves around the Earth. I love how these people who claim to be following the Bible cherry pick harder than an orchard at harvest time. Anyone who has read the Bible with a mind to study it would throw almost all of their assertions out the window at first run through, and the stuff they'd agree with is only stuff that everyone agrees is true. No wonder scientists increasingly think the religious crackpot, when this vocal minority is absolutely nuts and power hungry. Cause that's what this is. These people want power, and they then try to rewrite the world to explain why they should be given power. Funny, then, that the Bible bluntly rebukes people like that, over and over and over stating how the "humble" are the true inheritor's of God's mercy. Looking for ways to be put above others is something Jesus rebuked the Apostles for, and they were just being mildly prideful. Imagine the holy backhand these dudes would get if they talked to Jesus.

I see a lot of people blaming religion but c'mon you know if religion never existed humanity would find other reasons to justify their ignorance and hatred its just what humans do. Religion isn't the problem humans are. Its the reason why someone can follow a religion and be a peaceful kind person and someone else can follow the same religion and be hateful and evil. If someone wants to hate someone else they will no matter what. If someone wants to hate science they will no matter what. Humanity is amazing in its ability to justify its bad behavior no matter the background or regional beliefs.

@Michael Abbott good question. unfortunatly the answer is often not good enough for they who ask. all we can do is try the sciences used to be the study of nature and the world as it is. and yes, with the creator in mind. those days are gone. over the centuries they have become a 'world view' mostly devoid of truth. a good example would be the archaeologist. or paleantologist. who will readily jump to conclusions and/or fakery about their findings based on false premises such as strata or evolutionary wishfull thinking. all the while hoping for international acclaim in their fields. cosmologists are no different. the bottom line being intelectual pride and a blatant refusal to admit that there is an intelligence behind creation. (oh, did i forget to mention the money bit?) and if you should happen to find soft tissue in dinosaur bones you better shut up about it and if you do find human made tools where you shouldn't you better shut up about it and if you do find evidense that we are on an immovable domain at the center of the universe you'd better shut up about that too. cos truth has been bought and paid for and hidden away in the smithsonian institute so upstarts like you or me don't start to doubt their self injected authority on who and where we are. enough?

There is this video, I can't remember off the top of my head whether it was by minutephysics or vsauce, where they talk about the nature of the expansion of the universe being completely uniform means that you can view that expansion as coming from any given point and it will be accurate. I'm sure that geo-centrists would argue this is a way of saying that there is no center of the universe, but personally I think it can be interpreted in the far more interesting way that the entire universe in the center of the universe. Every single point is simultaneously the center, and to me I think you can definitely find some spiritual significance in that.

Well, this is all true, obviously, but the reason WHY these people exist is glossed over. First, for one to believe that Earth is flat and is the center of the universe, one needs to be uneducated, because of obvious reasons. Second, to believe that the conspiracy is possible, you have to witness some sort of conspiracy - the event in which something obviously false is brought forward as something true and made a de-facto "right" thing to say by the people with power. Third, there has to be a clear-cut reason for their ideas to be true. So the question "why do they believe this" is actually more interesting than "how do they profit of it" or "how they hoax people to agree with them". And an answer to this question is really simple: because all of the above are true for some people. All three. Media are often biased toward a view that they see as "right", there are things that are questionable at best, but are presented as fact and there is a reason for these things to be said like that, even if the reason itself might not be understood by the "masses". To put it simply: if you are ready to lie about or neglect, say, Biden's corruption, a man you want to be a president, what else are you ready to lie about to meet your goals? Where the line is drawn? And if something as big as that can be pulled, then what else can be done? What IS truth anymore, who can really lie to you? If you don't have a good understanding of the system and good basic education, the world really can seem to be this massive pile of lies and people tend to turn to the basics when they are in doubt. So yeah, it's throwing rocks in a glass house deal - by controlling and deciding the "universal truth", you open a way for the people to descend into more primal beliefs.

20 dager sidenDylan Chouinard
@Ivan Alberto Negrete Ojeda Eh, that’s not necessarily the case either. Scientists are constantly reevaluating theories and no researcher should claim their data applies to everything at all times. I wish that audiences were smart enough to recognize a science documentary that isn't...you know...good. If the director comes out and says that she's entertaining multiple perspectives or opinions, you probably have a bad science documentary on your hands. It isn't the viewer's responsibility to sort through a bunch of scientific evidence and decide what's true. It's the job of the documentary to do that for you and to then show you why. It's hardly the only potential sign you have some crap on your hands (for instance, Blackfish and Gasland are both science-adjacent documentaries that would meet that requirement, but endorse at best controversial views outside of the consensus of, respectively, marine biology and both geology and petroleum engineering in favor of forwarding an ideological stance), but it's a hell of a red flag.
27 dager sidenmirijason
Well actually... @3:07 the earth is not not at the center of the universe ;) it's actually a meaningless statement as you'd have to specify in which reference frame (basically meaning from which point of view) the earth is or is not at the center of. And as any reference frame is just as valid as any other, this statement is meaningless. So yeah, the earth is or is not at the center of the universe, pick the one you prefer and assume the harder calculations in one point of view compared to the other ;) Edit : Well actually... no. @5:03 and actually the whole paragraph encompassing this sequence, you don't need to discard anything to put the earth at the center of the universe. You just have to perform a coordinate transformation (which is something allowed by general covariance). Then you'd have some weird "forces" appearing that look very much like Coriolis forces but at a cosmological scale and everything, gravity, relativity and so on would work just fine everywhere ;)
