I have been watching sailing channels for a few years now, and I believe that's the first time I have ever seen anyone leave a jetty purely by sail, and apologies, I just recently subbed you, mainly because I work in Norway

Awesome birds I view & I hope you let us know when you upgrade your boat, it would be perfect for me, myself and I

So ya'll just gonna have an opening sequence with a boiling ocean from 2 different flyover angles and not so much as an acknowledgement that maybe not everybody playing from home knows why the ocean in Norway is boiling?

@Paul SJ neat, thanks

You can find it with aunt goo: It's a submerged outlet of cold water from a hydropower plant a few miles off the fjord.

You guys are genuine explorers... while I'm resigned to walking tropical beaches the rest of my days. But who's complaining? Season's Greetings!
Måned sidenDavid Foran
I liked your guide on the glacier better than your Viking buddy. If she were my guide, I would follow her anywhere.

DIngy shots of Uma sailing down a Norwegian fjord results in rare jewelicious Uma footage/photos! Thanks for sharing glacier hike. Kika, the beautiful Haitian, hikes glacier is also rare and jewelicious!

What about Climate change? and the effects in Norway! In the world? Nothing?

Certainly more than nothing... I heard enough about that glacier. Most astounding to me is it's constant(!) mass! To save the world is a different mission.

As my screen-name may indicate - I approve of this video. The age of the ice is just a few hundred years, though. And the whole thing came to existence as a permanent feature again ca 6000 years ago. And the coolest thing about us glaciers is that we are moving. Unlike normal ice we behave more like very sticky toothpaste - thus flowing by the same general physics as water. Sadly we are getting terminated. But not by people under sail. Kudos.
Måned sidenWayne Bridges
That was cool, haha great work you two my regards to you both from Australia.

So Cool to see you on Nigardsbreen! If you had continued to the top you could have come down in the valley where I grew up, Oldedalen by the famous Briksdal Glacier which is another arm of the same Jostedalsbreen. Fun fact, last time the glaciers in the area was growing was in the early to mid 90’s. Then we had very mild winters with lots of snowfall. Later winters in the area was colder and had less snowfall and the glacier has been melting more during summer then the ammount of snow added during winter. So, for this glacier warmer winters helps grow the glacier. Last year was another mild winter and we had up to 16-17 meters of fresh snow added on the tops. Hoping for another mild winter this year :) Enjoyed these videos very much! Thank you! Roger from SailMermaid

Hi Guys, Was not kidding I know you are over in Norway for the first time. I remember some time ago you said in the future you intend sailing back to Canada. I do advise you to return either in spring or summertime or via English Chanel I have lots of experience in the North Sea sailing I will show you what I experienced myself in this link https://youtu.be/suWosaO1F6I?t=5 I do enjoy your videos which are well-edited & great music choice. Keep up the great informative filming...Norway's fjords are in winter some of the most beautiful in the world. Also, I found some of the yachts and larger boats do sail near the festive season with a Christmas tree placed at the very top of the mask with lights on...awesome I can tell you...stay safe all the best, Alistair
Måned sidenStiff Wood
@16:21 In the lower left corner you can see a farm clinging on to the mountain side. This is a typical example on a settlement that could have been in a popular TV shows in Norway called "Where no one would believe that someone could live" (Hvor ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bu) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488683/). A unique show I don't think could have been made anywhere else in the World.

Bet when you were young living in a hot country you never thought you would be walking on a glacier ☺
Måned sidenScott Swineford
Some of my fondest memories are of fishing with my grandfather in the streams just below the glaciers of the eastern Sierras. Incredible beauty. I wonder if crampons were the inspiration for Steve Martin's short story "Cruel Shoes" long ago.

Hey guys, wondering what the water is - fresh, salt brackish where you are?
Måned sidenCassidy Eskew
I'm so glad that I am still young and in high school where I can watch these videos before going places. If I didn't watch these youtube videos, I would never think to go to Norway or any of these northern places. If I ever do end up sailing my brain would automatically think about sailing in tropical places and I would have totally missed a place like this.

Most boating comments indicate that it s not possible to be sailed in fjords and we need sailing with the engine. So you prove the contrary... Your videos are amazing and entertaining but also instructive... Like the one on Alverstraumen passage and most other... Continue to make us dream. Bon vent.
Måned sidenSailing Uma
Ha! Yeah we're getting quite used to folks telling us we can't do something, while we're busy doing it. One of our patrons who lives and sails in this Fjord told us we're probably the first sailboat to actually SAIL all the way in since the Vikings. Not sure if it's true, but it certainly made us feel accomplished.

The last time I went up a Norwegian fjord we were doing twenty three knots and had no trouble with fickle winds. Mind you we were in a Royal Navy frigate going to Bergen for a bit of light cross country skiing. It was just on dawn and I don't think I have ever been so cold as I was on the bow. csl

Spectacular drone work. All of it. Curious, how deep (average) are the fjord waters? Let us know if you think of it next episode. Too bad you can’t fish in slack waters.
Måned sidenzooloo73
It is hard to calculate an average of the depths, but it is deep. The deepest part of Sognefjorden is 1308m (~4 300'). Norwegian Yellow Pages has a nautical chart in beta. This link should take you to Gaupne: https://pasjoen.gulesider.no/#map=13.17/61.3957/7.30467 You can browse from there - depths in meters.

Nice class about glacier. But I became so afraid when Kika stopped on the edge of that deep well. It’s so dangerous for me. Better to be on the boat, even with that lack of wind. But, it was one of the best episodes you ever posted. Congratulations.

Norway is still as beautiful as when we visited it the last time 12 years ago during our holiday. Scary to see the Nigardsbreen retreaded up the mountain. 12 Years ago the glacier wall was right at the lake. I paused your youtube to compare it with my photos in my photoalbum. Enjoy your journey in one of my favorite country's Hopefully one day i can visit Norway again with my girlfriend and our 2 children. Greetings from the netherlands

Man, is there anything you can throw at Kika that she is not going to catch and master instantly? She took to those crampons in a blink. Beautiful landscapes and that guide friend is adorable.

Love all your videos, living vicariously through you. Altho, hope to do this myself when we retire. Have a few odd questions. First, happy thanksgiving, hope you had a nice one. Do you by any chance, know what step you guys went over your pvc cargo net storage behind the couch? Looking for it and can't find it. What brand and type is your boom box/radio? Is that what does your disco lights in the back ground too?? What type of paddle boards do you have? Do you know where Kika got her cool hammock? Thanks so much for your time and effort in all you do for the channel and all of us future sailors.
Måned sidenJacqueline Chiasson
The quality of your videos is second to none. You open up unexplored areas of the world for most of us and show us the beauty of stepping away from everyday life. Thank you! I so appreciate your enthusiasm and senses of humour. Keep up the awesome voyages.

I've been enjoying your videos for a while now, you guys create such wonderful videos about all sorts of places, do it's so incredibly cool to see you guys visiting my home country and home county! How often do you scrape the hull of sea life , so may sail effectively with out drag ?
Måned sidenSailing Uma
We sail enough that our hull stays pretty clean.
Måned sidenEITURKEY1

Måned sidenmythokki
Can’t believe you walked on a glacier that was obviously a shadow of its former self and literally melting under your feet without any comment on why that might be. In Bergen, a fascinating place with such a maritime history we saw you walk up a hill in the dark to view a non-event sunrise that you didn’t seem much interested in while Kika clowned around and seemed surprised to find a cable car at the summit. Maybe Covid has something to do with it, but how would we know since the videos now have zero context. They could be from 2019, who knows? All surface gloss, not much substance, lots of pretty shots of an incurious Dan and Kika mugging their way across the globe. Perhaps that is the only way to survive in the YouTube fishbowl, but it is too bad. I feel like I am watching 12-year-olds instead of a pair of thoughtful, intelligent adults. Have watched from the beginning, but giving up now. Best of luck, stay safe. UNSUBSCRIBED.
Måned sidenmythokki
@Sailing Uma I do get what you are saying and respect it, but your videos previous to this series did seem to have more context, depth and more of your own “take” on the world, which is now not there and is missed. I think it is valuable and wouldn’t turn you into the Discovery Channel! Certainly, there is enough crap in the world right now that escapism is no bad thing, but a steady diet of sugar is not so great either. I know from watching your past videos that you are both passionate, thoughtful individuals with strong opinions and amazing talents to share, but I guess you know your demographic best and what works for you. Fair winds.
Måned sidenSailing Uma
Yes, we walked on a glacier at the end of a hot summer. Of course it was melting. It also grows again in the winter depending on how much it snows. Aside from that which we observe through our personal experience, we'll leave the rest up to the scientists and experts who dedicate their lives work to these things and trust in those smarter than us. If you need someone to tell you what to believe and how to think, go watch the "news". That's not what we're about. We're here to share our real experiences of the places we actually go and the people we meet. We don't have an agenda or follow a script. It's just the two of us. We're not a Natgeo or Discovery show, scripted and produced to focus on one single event or timeline. We're just sharing our lives and the things we do. If that isn't enough for you then feel free to watch something else.
Måned sidenPeter Tew

@Sailing Uma Yes it's like deciding to have a big water tank or a water maker, it's all a compromise.
Måned sidenSailing Uma
It wouldn't help us much unless we increased our charging capabilities too. Our goal has always been to not need to plug in for a charge at a dock. It's been a long process since it's never really been done before, the way we're trying to do it. But we're still heading that way.
