Is that a forced retirement from F1 to make it go away faster , if I was the team boss I'd want grosjean back for at least one GP to settle his demons and move on , same if I was the driver , unfinished business , it was a freak accident really and the chances of it happening again are almost zero

The way Grosjean's Haas went through the armco reminded me of Allan McNish's equally massive Suzuka shunt at the exit of 130R (one of the fastest corners in F1) -luckily the Toyota didn't catch fire, and McNish didn't hit the barrier, he survived with minor injuries as well but never raced in F1 again. He too was a very lucky fu*ker that day... :(

Everyone keeps saying how shocking this is. Why the hell is this steel guard rail here anyways? Ever heard of safer barriers? Did Titanium vs steel ever enter anyone's mind? F1 and particularly this race track dropped the ball on this deal, and while stuff happens in racing, the praise of this Halo is inconsequential if the steel rail isn't there to begin with.

Grosjean was saved by the halo. I think that is clear. But this accident highlighted the biggest problem with the barrier. The design of the barrier is archaic. No car should go through the barrier. And the angle it was situated in relation to the track is just wrong. A car should never be able to hit a barrier that close at what was basically 90 degree or head on. Who the hell thought that was ok?? We have barrier along our highways that are angled at maybe 15 degree and the secondary barrier which the vehicle can't hit has a much more severe angle. What are these people thinking? As for the safety car and the marshalls? What an incredible job!! They are all heroes!! They were in there without hesitation.

Nobody, to my knowledge, in the media has yet mentioned something glaringly obvious; after the crash the barrier, that had deformed and arguably took some of the energy out of that crash, was replaced with a set of large concrete blocks, linked together, and with a small mound of Earth piled up behind them to further keep them in place. All in the same place as the barrier, where it had just been demonstrated that it was possible to have a 100+ mph head-on accident, with little or no chance to brake. Then the race was re-started and the bulk of a race distance run with that concrete barrier sat there. Was that an even more unsafe situation than what Grosjean crashed into? Will it be there this coming weekend for the Sakhir GP? While the blocks may move if hit, will they do the same job as the Armco in dissipating crash forces? Was linking them together and piling Earth up behind them (so reducing any “give”) a good idea? Given the Armco set-up where Grosjean crashed, at an angle relative to the straight to allow for the access road behind, was arguably in the wrong place/ wrong barrier for this situation, have those concrete blocks just made things far worse? It’s probably statistically very unlikely another car will go off in exactly the same place as Grosjean, but his crash proves it definitely isn’t impossible.

It’s absolutely amazing that he has suffered as few injuries as he did. Rewind this 4-5 years back and he’s dead in that split second. I can not believe that nobody thought of a possibility of a car crashing into those ‘barriers’, those were as bad a choice as it gets, in that turn that kind of wall is so dangerous and reckless, you’d think a mix of impact tires and concrete and rubber mix wall would be so much more effective in absorbing the impact of crash and minimize the risks of injury to the driver. One thing for sure. In this race, HALO saved 2 drivers lives.

The Medical Car driver and the Doctor NEVER JUMPED OVER THE ARMCO. Replays clearly show they stayed on the track side of the barrier and help Romain as he climbed over the barrier to the track side. Ted, I know it was an emotional moment to stand at that spot but don't distort the facts and add things that are Not True.

the barrier splitting could have dissipated enough energy for the impact not being hard enough. 53G is enough as it is. If it where a concrete barrier it could have been much higher. Even a few seconds more in that fire could have horrific results, his visor was melted in that time already.

Lucky guy, glad he's okay! However, can we get some perspective on the aftermath....."for the sake of tastefulness I dont want to go any closer" [Ted in relation to filming the barrier]. Its a burnt barrier Ted........get a grip, Romain is fine! I think your audience can handle seeing a damaged barrier.
Måned sidenChris T
No doubt the halo saved Romain...but these barriers must be looked at on all circuits & yet nothing has been said why he went off at such an angle into that barrier & what caused it. maybe on some circuits tyre barriers or some catch netting should be used to slow these missiles down.

As a Ryan Newman fan, after his crash this year I had a feeling I never wanted to feel again. Only casually watching F1, seeing this crash brought that feeling right back. It's both a testament to safety that both drivers are not only alive, but aren't paralyzed/life alteringly injured, but can also be an opportunity to further make all auto racing safer. Very happy to see Grosjean escape this one

These barriers are used on motorways, with a top speed of 70mph, and they have been in use for decades. How does that make them suitable for Formula 1 tracks?
Måned sidenTeribus13
Truthfully, I don't think they're suitable for ANY tracks. Barriers like these are designed to deflect a vehicle which is travelling roughly parallel with them. As this crash shows, they can't absorb a vehicle travelling towards them on a more perpendicular trajectory. On most tracks, that could be a very likely outcome. IMO, better to have energy absorbing barriers trackside, than deflecting barriers.

From a pure physics perspective, it's probably better that it was a steel barrier that gave-way under the force of the collision then a concert barrier that would not have. The deceleration forces on Grosjean would have been greater with a barrier that did not move or give, which could have lead to more blunt-force injuries or even being rendered unconscious from the impact.
Måned sidenIan McLean
It was the steel barrier splitting and trapping the front of the car that caused the rear of the car to be severed from the front of the car - which ended in the fuel being ignited. I think the take away is neither steel nor concrete are appropriate barriers.
