Former Air Force Fighter Pilot Breaks Down 12 Fighter Pilot Scenes From Film & TV | WIRED

Former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot Christine "Grinder" Mau examines some flying and dogfighting scenes from popular movies and television shows, and determines how accurate they really are. Could Iron Man actually outclass an F-22? As seen in 'Dunkirk,' what kind of a challenge does glare actually pose? Does 'The Incredibles' get pilot language right?

Very interesting lady but as far as looking at most accurate depictions Dunkirk is spot on for the time and the aircraft...she was comparing it to today’s aircraft but that movie was absolutely spot on and not just with the aircraft scenes. It’s funny the top gun gets a pass every time as ask anyone who was a kid when that movie first came out and we all wanted to be a pilot of some description after watching it !

My uncle went by the callsign "Jolly Roger" during the events of BEL, and was the pilot who located O'Grady, who was subsequently retrieved by the Marines. I asked him if he'd seen the movie. He said yes rather curtly and with a sigh. I asked what he thought of it and he said it was ok, and "I enjoyed it, but..." visibly upset, he paused for at least a minute before continuing with "It was a fun movie and I enjoyed it, but, nope... Not impressed. I can't get through it after the first time." I asked him how accurate it was and he just laughed dryly and asked my aunt and parents how long till lunch was ready.

The Coffin corner is an area of the flight envelope usually at very high altitude where an aircrafts stall speed rapidly approaches its critical mach number, meaning that the margin between the minimum possible speed and the maximum possible speed necessary to continue with controlled flight has narrowed until it eventually reaches zero.

Also we gotta remember that an F-22 can just hold supersonic flight without afterburners. Unless that F-22 is just throttling back to save fuel, it should be supersonic as well.

Coffin corner in civil aviation, is pretty much the nearing of stallspeed, and mach 1. As air density decreases, you need to fly a higher airspeed (or same IAS) to not stall. But the speed of sound gets slower. So If you can't go supersonic and go to high, you get to a point where if you slow down just a bit you stall, but if you speed up you'll break you aircraft by going supersonic, or get into other problems due to aerodynamics being different when supersonic. Check out this video, which explains it in a bit more details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iihO40tY7u4.

I believe that when fighters "fly" closely in the BFM or ACM or Interception for the big screen, the film maker wants the audiences to see all the "actions" to make it exciting & entertaining.

Ok, first of all great job! But, regarding the term “missile lock”. She said that you lock up a bandit with your radar (which is true in most of the aircraft), but the F-14 could actually maintain a lock with a aim 9 seeker head, giving you a veery loud missile tone. Of course, it was more effective to lock up a bandit with your radar, but still in the tomcat terminology “missile lock” is not that far off.

Your first mistake is using a movie like Top Gun to validate real life fighter tactics/terminology! The IR missile used on the F-14 is the same missile used on all US fighters, F-15/16/18/22/35.

Great video - but potting aside the superhero stuff - a lot of the inaccuracies are intentional. Take Top Gun - those dogfights scenes were a joke in most ways - but as the producers of the movie said, if they had shown the real thing to laymen they would not understand. A real pilot like you, would have some serious "pucker factor" being painted by an enemy miles away - which is what really tends to happen, because you understand. To recreate that drama for an audience of laymen, they show the jets ridiculously close to each other. If they showed it realistically, the audience would never see the adversary aircraft. For me, it is much like watching K-19 - a movie I love as a former nuclear submarine reactor operator - but some of what was in there was BS, but it allowed the audience to emotionally connect to the story, so that they could get a sense of what those poor Russians were going through.

In defense of the movies, they have to keep their masks off. This way the audience can see who is talking etc. if everyone had their masks on everyone would look the same and it would be harder to keep track with what’s going on.

Sometimes I understand they get stuff wrong, but when it comes to terminology (and I don't know a lot about that, just a few things) they should be able to get it right :) I mean, yeah, play with physics and all that, that's done on a regular basis in every type of scene so why not, but the terminology I want them to get right. Would be fun if you looked at the scene in Patlabor the Movie 2 where they're following what looks like unknown fighters on radar. I have a feeling that it will be accurate, at least more than most of these clips. It's funny how The Incredibles got so much terminology right while the movies that revolved around pilots just missed the mark :)

Coffins Corner is the point where you are at the altitude where air density is lower and the aircrafts speed is maxed out. Less air density means you need more speed to maintain control. If your maxed out and the air density is too low it is very easy to lose control of the aircraft and also may cause engine problems due to less air to cool the engines. Her being a fighter pilot, it kinda surprises me she doesn't know about coffins corner.
