Awwww, too short! Need another half hour fix! (Where’s your next episode?) Well done guys! Very easy to watch! I did notice that you were running your kite as a headsail (i.e. both sheets aft of your forestay) and so you would have had to have tacked the kite like a headsail and in doing so, on one tack the kite would be pressed against the furler/forestay. I realise that to do it the other way (i.e. the ‘Assymetric’ way) you would have to have longer sheets and much more enthusiastic hauling in on he new sheet during an ‘Aso’ gyre, but it does give you a little more flexibility (EXCEPT for having to suspend the lazy sheet, to prevent it falling under the bow. This reduces the risk of damage to the kite from chafeing/tearing on some sharp object up forward (Lifeline split pins on the Pulpit?) Horses for courses of course and certainly not a criticism in any way, just voicing a personal preference (And perhaps subconsciously demonstrating my bent/kink for performance/racing!) ;-) Keep up the great work guys - love your work and inspired by your effortless can-do attitude! (Not to mention absolutely green with envy over your lifestyle!!!) :-D

Yeah, since our asym is on a furler, if we need to gybe, we just roll it, and pull it out on the other side, we can do it as fast, or faster than a typical gybe, and it works every time. No sheet fouling on the anchor, no change of tears etc. works marvellously well.

Good luck with your advertising channel and partnerships. I'm not interested in being shown what to buy just because you got it discounted or free. However I give props to your great camera work and early videos. Pretty sure I'm in the minority not liking adverts so my unsub will be unnoticeable. Fair winds and enjoy your sailing.

@Sailing Uma You say to have thought about it a little more than most. Seeing you obviously making a drama putting on Foul weather gear doing an extended piece to camera with logo's front and centre yet you don't say anything about it being partnered? What would be more transparent is: "We've been looking for Wet Gear for for ages and found ZHIK company, this is their stuff we bought or got discounted Today weather is bad enough we are putting it through it's paces. Then some actual details about Gear, (that you spend so long looking for so must have had specific requirements) How waterproof is it, do the fasteners work, are the sizes as expected, is it warm? Not getting any of that, only knowing it was an advert because I (most don't) checked the extend description, is obfuscated at best Seems like your not being candid at all to me. Having said that everyone is different, my incredibility at you doing such reviews without seeing you cringe inside, really could just means I'm arrogant, supercilious and bios to my own morals . MANTRA?? You believe in the most fatuous mantra I've ever heard outside of a dystopian fascist regime. "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" Can you honestly think about that and realise what it actually means. Imagine a child hearing that saying repeated over and over Even an adult, not knowing you may have different nuances on how you interpret it. (benefit of the doubt there) Bullied, Don t tell teacher. Husband beats you up, keep silent New Baby is not your husbands, shhh A Faulty produce kills you child, say nothing bad Your partner is doing things that annoy you, keep quiet and 6 months later divorce? Run a sailing channel and don't let followers know about poor companies, or shoddy equipment... disingenuous at best. No one should feel, by peer pressure, societal ethics or fiscal responsibility to curtail their true thoughts, to filter them to only grovelling obsequious niceties that by their nature become meaningless. Speaking your mind is a personal moral obligation, a duty to yourself to express your opinion. Saying nice things all the time is intentionally dishonest to yourself, others, and does not make the world a better place. It makes the world a sad deceitful, perfidious almost Machiavellian place. Obviously you should be tactful and polite, not denigrating. Choosing possible benefit to others over any perceived future impediment to yourself, but say what you think, you must. This goes some way as to why your review process, procedure, mindset, has rubbed my wrong hopefully explaining my annoying posts. Were just so different in our life outlook, and that’s OK :) Understanding you have to defend your point of view, Still there's no reason for me to reply and waste your sailing or relaxing time in replying so I will leave you in peace and reply no more. Fair Winds

Sailing Uma

Sorry bud, but you really have it all wrong. We can't speak for any other channel, but we can speak for us. We never work with companies that require us to say anything. There is nothing in any of the "contracts" that dictate talking points, or what we can or can't say etc. WE also choose the companies we work with and often spend months negotiating with them. We choose them because after doing months or sometimes years of research they are the ones we feel are the best fit for what we need. So in a way, yes we are biased, but only because we only choose the best for our needs, so that will inevitably translate into our use and how we talk about the gear we have. We also don't receive all our gear for free, a lot of it we buy full price, like anyone else. We chose what gear we think will work best for us, then reach out to the company to see if there is a mutually beneficial relationship to be had. If there isn't, we still end up buying the gear anyway. No, we don't bad mouth all the other companies or gear we either didn't choose or tried and didn't work. We're firm believers in the old mantra "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Most, if not all, of the companies we work with, we do so on a collaborative basis. Meaning, if there is an issue or something we think could be improved on, after at least 1 year of hard use, we relay that to the company so the can improve on it for next season. But if you listen carefully to what we say, those same concerns are often brought up in our weekly videos as well. Those who trust our opinions and ethos, trust the gear we trust. But we always encourage others to do their own research and find out what fits their needs best. We understand the responsibility we have to be honest and not sell out for a paycheck. Maintaining the trust we have with those who watch our videos is more important to us than any check from any company.

@Sailing Uma It's bias, intentional or not. There is no list in you dooblydoo of Collaborating Partners that you parted ways with due to not liking their products. There is no videos of items you received that you then show how bad they and company support is. There is no Alternative recommendations (as you will have a sponsorship deal and have restrictions on what you say) I'm sure the products are suitable and do a good job. But they are advertising, they are from companies that "need" to advertise that alone tells you something. Your not going to throw away a winch handle that annoys you, to buy another yourself for example. Don't take this the wrong way Your vids are great, you build up a following, and you seem like great people, you have to make a living and this helps. Fair play to you - wish you luck etc. But for someone wanting to get into the sailing world, they will have many YT feeds if they all have partnered products this invades their mind space when buying gear. Just take ZHIK for example, Is it the best Foul weather gear? Does it last? you wouldn't know it's hardly been worn Are there more fiscally appropriate products? Would you bin it and buy alternate gear ? Etc. That kind of thing can be said for all you many sponsors and partners, anyone new to sailing watching this and other similar videos will have to try hard to dismiss anything said about these products as they are not being unbiasedly reviewed against competing products, They are just being given to channels with followers to increase sales. And of course you will also get the best service and support for the products which may not be indicative of a normal user. As I said though, I'm not knocking you personally, I just disagree with the path you are going down to support yourselves. I'm in the minority and of no importance. I do like however, to let a channel know exactly why I left. You have done great work on that boat and taken some awesome videos and there has been some really useful advice, thankyou for that. Sorry Patron didn't earn enough for you to continue. Fair winds and following seas Kind Regards Transmitthis

@Sailing Uma Silly objections. Length of a rope is not a maximum, but decided at purchase time. Besides, by using shorter ropes you can learn how to splice. If you are concern about the trees even though the suitable ones has natural protection, you could use some dead branches as chafe protection. If you want to become a true viking while visiting you better quit allowing problems to become part of life. That way you will never be able to truly enjoy coast life.

Måned siden
Sailing Uma

For one, they're not long enough. But also, we use chafe gear to protect the tree trunks, and we still need to go to shore to recover that.

How much longer till you move the main sheet & traveler forward of the dodger, so you can have a nice Bimini full time and side & aft curtains to enclose the cockpit ? Sun, rain and wind are not your friends and add to fatigue.

Måned siden
Sailing Uma
Sailing Uma

Never, we love having it right there by the helm. Easy to adjust and control the sail. If we moved it forward, we would have to run it to the boom and back to a cabin top winch, which would make trimming it and adjusting the traveler and real PITA. Besides, we have autopilot and foul weather gear. We don't really see the need for a cockpit enclosure. We like to feel the wind.

Welcome home to Norway :) I have been watching a few of your episodes from Holland up here to Norway, and I really like the way you take what hits you. If you ever pass the island of Ona on your way up the west coast, give me a shout and I'll be there if I'm not at work out at sea when you pass the most beautiful little island on your way up north along the coast of our lovely but rocky piece of land. My boat is a bit more traditional than yours, but still I understand what it's all about. I love your channel and the way you take to all new stuff, even though throwing a "pilk" with your fishing rods is absolutely a nono out here... but how could you know that anyway :P I would probably do just the same and probably worse over in Canada ( Ooooooh, Canada...) Please, give me a shout if you are ever close to my area between Ålesund and the island of tiny little Ona a bit further north. This was a good episode to showcase your communication and manoeuvring skills (leaving fjord and docking). You work well as a team and it is good that both of you know how to trim sails. It is wonderful to see a couple enjoying each other’s company and operate as one. Regarding your dingy filling with rain and wave splash, it may be a good idea to have a rain fly installed to shed the water off of it while towing it or while at anchor/moored. Just a couple of snaps should do it.

Curious.....is the dinghy motor electric? If not, why not?

We have both. Electric for short, slow trips. Gas motor for everything else.

In the mountains we might call them lateral valley's so perhaps those are called lateral fjords? Likely something entirely different! Lolol

@William C Sallai estuaries? perhaps? narrow inlets? I think you are correct, firths is a better term!

In Scotland the equivalent to fjord is a loch and those bodies of water that lochs are perpendicular to are called firths. Maybe there is a Scandinavian term for it?

Everyone here knows your bread and butter is the US. Quit with the bs metric. There are two types of countries in the world, those who use the metric system and those who have been to the moon... Eagle screeches freedom in the back ground...

I definitely understand what you are saying, however he is Canadian and she is from Haiti. So, metric is what they are used to. Even if they were from the US, using the local terms makes it easier to get around. I do like the flourish at the end with the Eagle screeching freedom!

I had the fortunate experience of being in Bergen for a week a few years ago. Lovely place and it only rained twice while I was there - once for 4 days and then for 3 days.

You guys work so well together, it is as if you were both made for each other. I am learning a lot from you guys about sailing and boat life. I am so inspired by you both. Another wonderful and amazing video. Saving now to buy my own sailboat.

Question, with docking at the end of this vlog, did you have to radio in to take that spot at port?

I think it would be interesting to learn the history of Uma from the initial launch up to the point that you bought her. Old photos and anecdotes from previous owners etc could make an interesting video, if you can track it down.
