Very good work that they have done to keep the drivers as safe as possible. Would like them to adopt the safer barrier that NASCAR USES ON all tracks they race on. I understand that some tracks in F1 can't install that type of barrier due to the track also being part of a public roadway, but I think it should still be considered at least for the most dangerous parts of those tracks.

140ish mph straight into a wall, car sliced in half, engulfed in flames, driver gets out and walks away. 30 years ago that would have been fatal. There's no doubt in my mind of that. Amazing cars with phenomenal safety systems.

That first Marshall with the fire extinguisher was scared to approach the car and uselessly sprayed the asphalt outside the flame area. The Armco barrier could have killed him, surely that has to go.

the reason he survived is because the energy was dissipated by the split, plus the bending of the barrier. A unbreakable barrier + non-splitting car, he would probably would have died or lost consciousness and then burned very badly.

Christmas miracle came early this year. Hope to see him get back to racing soon.

I'd suggest that the damage to the lithium battery pack is what ignited the fuel leaked from the damaged fuel cell. As soon as the air contacted the exposed lithium it would have burst into flames.

My concern when the Halo system first came in was that it would delay a driver getting out of the vehicle in an emergency, or possibly even prevent him being able to get out. Looking at the footage in detail and listening to Grosjean's own recounting of the incident this was indeed the case. His position, with the underside of the car appearing to have penetrated the barrier first would suggest that HALO had less beneficial effect than has been suggested. The HALO system would need to be examined to see exactly what damage it has but my concerns about HALO remain. Had he been unable to extract himself, as was very nearly the case, he would almost certainly have been significantly more seriously injured, or dead. Halo would have made it significantly more difficult for rescuers to extract him. As it was, it certainly delayed his extraction.

3:57 The barrier should overlap itself or be one solid guard rail system, you can see three separate metal rails which the car can get stuck between, kind of a dumb design in my opinion.

The barrier was too strong which is a paradox, if the barrier was less stronger the car would not brake in half

Grosjean did NOT need any help getting over the barrier. He got HIMSELF out of the car and the marshalls played ZERO role in his survival. He is his OWN hero. The only thing the marshal did was keep him from falling down after jumping off the barrier, which would not have been a big deal.

@butti fdft That is the biggest issue and nobody is talking about it. There had to be a better way to create these entrances. That would have been a glancing blow had not the wall narrowed the track by 20 or more degrees. And then there's the issue of what the hell is an armco doing there. What is the standard for allowing armco's to be used where or even is there a standard. If someone can't afford to build a race track f1 shouldn't be racing there.

The FIA should adopt the windscreen into the HALO system like Indycar uses to prevent smaller objects from entering the cockpit. It would not change the look of it but would go a long way toward keeping smaller objects out of the drivers face. I was among those that disliked the HALO system at first but this and other incidents proves how well it works and definitely saved Grosjean's life. I have been watching F1 for over 30 years and have never seen anything like that. Scariest F1 crash ever that was not fatal.

We came so far from what Niki Lauda suffered during that fateful day in Nurburgring.

Marshal with portable fire extinguisher made no difference at all. Those are useless in a self feeding fire like that one. Plus he was scared and too far away from the fire. Monocoque integrity, halo and fire resistant suit saved Romain`s life in that order.

just for psychological reasons that entrance should be changed or move down further.

Without the Halo there is zero doubt that Grosjean would not be with us now and the manor of his demise would have been horrific -- thanks to the Halo that didn't happen. The FIA is going to have to look into how to better prevent the fuel cell from rupturing the way it did because if Romain had been slowed by maybe just another 30 seconds the outcome could have been far worse.

That's why you don't place an ARMCO at angle like that, at one of the fastest parts of the track. Literally anything else would have been than ARMCO in this situation. Solid concrete would have been better.
