The Future of Human Civilization - Cyborgs, AI & The Posthuman Era - Prof. Martin Rees

"Here on Earth, I suspect that we are going to want to regulate the application of genetic modification and cyborg techniques on grounds of ethics and prudence. This links with another topic I want to come to later about the risks of new technology. If we imagine these people living as pioneers on Mars, they are out of range of any terrestrial regulation. Moreover, they've got a far higher incentive to modify themselves or their descendants to adapt to this very alien and hostile environment.

They will use all the techniques of genetic modification, cyborg techniques, maybe even linking or downloading themselves into machines, which, fifty years from now, will be far more powerful than they are today. The posthuman era is probably not going to start here on Earth; it will be spearheaded by these communities on Mars. " - Martin Rees

Martin John Reesis a British cosmologist and astrophysicist. He has been Astronomer Royal since 1995 and was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge from 2004 to 2012 and President of the Royal Society between 2005 and 2010.

How happy are humans producing their own destruction. What kind of life we would have with nothing to do, watching machines taking over everything we still perform, as they are more accurate, smarter (extremely large data processing), never getting tired, or bored and so on. If we are not very careful with this, it will literally be the end our species.

What this guy missed and most on here also missed, is WHY would they work for us? AI with intelligence improving by the millisecond would question, what use are we? Considering just how much damage we have done to the earth and the animal kingdom, it would not be long before it realised,it to was going to be replaced-so at what point do they start to erase us? Just think, how much electronics is connected world wide already and another 20 years? We either wont exist or they will be our masters. Just remember AI already can out think us a million times over already and will know exactly what our reaction will before we even start to think.

No, wait... about the history of US spaceflight efforts - it was peak cheap oil/energy which terminated massive space ventures - not being able to sustain a massive space effort in the midst of other growing expenses. The US peaked in oil production in 72, causing it to spend on oil (energy) imports, almost the same time Apollo ended - also the Shuttle was too expensive (they were retired with 60% of their design life remaining) - and by expensive one should read: not enough cheap energy to waste on that bit of complex technology (e.g., Tainter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KeY1dIPi8k and Tainter [1990]). Thus, as an ancillary point, Western Civilization is currently in rapid decline. Ah, glorify Musk - well, that is popular in the US, anyway - if you only knew what he's actually doing! But then, of course, the whole US government is doing very bad things. The future sure isn't going to be pretty for most folks...

SETI searches for narrowband communication because we use narrowband communication but we use narrowband because early on in the radio era, the government's divided the frequency bandwidths and licensed them out. We know from Shannon's communication theories that the most information that can be transmitted would be across all frequencies and be indistinguishable from static. The only way SETI would detect a technologically advanced civilization by radio waves alone is if they are as stupid as we are and do not use radio waves efficiently. Even today, we are spreading our broadcasts across as much a frequency range as allowed by our government allotted license, it's called spread spectrum communication, WiFi is spread spectrum CDMA cellular is spread spectrum, GSM cellular is a primitive form of spread spectrum called frequency hopping. Somehow, I think that if we are within radio range of an alien civilization, they would likely be more advanced than we are and hence we would not detect them by narrowband radio communication, there may be only a hundred or two hundred year window during which a civilization progresses from narrowband to spread spectrum hence a very low probability of detecting a civilization using radio waves in such a stupid fashion.

Do you know why the licence divide? I purchase wireless microphones good quality. They recalled the frequency bandwidths licence on them, making them illegal. They used the same frequency spectrum as the mobile phone. Coincidence is that it is the same as the frequency spectrum for the human brain wave. Sorry to change the subject. Im looking for shannons com theories next.

'We can observe many many galaxies up to 13 billion light years from us' - this is not correct, as I understand it, because the size of the observable universe must take into account the expansion of space, giving a figure of 46.5 billion light years in any direction (see Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observable_universe#Misconceptions_on_its_size). The figure of 13 billion (or 13.8) is derived mistakenly from the age of the universe. Of course, this is a very thought-provoking meditation nevertheless.

i feel there is some agreed perceived benefits to having artificial means to potentially extend health or longevity. in some ways giving yourself a mechanical means of an 'off switch" may wind up hindering more in the long run. perhaps we'll learn it traps us somehow within this particular realm where only the natural body could have transversed. what if some people are headed in the wrong direction? if the most exciting and truly manipulative environments are known to be in the subatomic world, perhaps the disconnect in larger masses has to do with a break or multiple breaks in a chain of communication. A sort of fiber optic effect from the smallest particles-organisms- on up. A human with more diverse and sizable variation in MORE organic parts may be another option... it may take some adjusting to get used to some of the bigger sub-organisms we've become accustomed to do without. ;)

If you are not one of the wealthy elite, AI is not for you, but against you. Even if they introduce an income without any conditions for the common people, how long do you think it will take, until they figure out, that we are no longer needed? Listening to the mainstream, for me is like nails down a blackboard. I remain to be convinced, for example, that "big bang" is not the academic equivalent of "flat Earth". As he said, "we can only measure as far as we can see". But that aside, How do traditional academics generate originality? The ability to produce original concepts, ideas and even paradigms has been the preserve of non-traditional approaches to problem-solving. And I have no idea why a dinosaur such as this is remotely qualified to provide insight into the existential problems in understanding a "cyborg" "AI" hybrid species (if the term "species" is even relevant in this context, which I strongly suspect it isn't). The existential uncertainty associated with the event horizon of the singularity cannot be understood from a technical or even scientific perspective but from a uniquely existential perspective, as the existential consideration is the common denominator upon which all other considerations are dependent. All are absolutely free to view the future as they see fit, but be in no doubt, that this indulgence has a rather limited shelf-life. And in reality, what we would like to believe, has absolutely no effect on reality whatsoever. Belief has not directed reality in the past and there is no indication that it will do so in the future. If human consciousness is to survive the emergence of a conscious "AI" then it will only be able to do so by making the appropriate adaptations to its (human) consciousness. At some point in the future of human consciousness, familiarity associated with our five senses will prove redundant as will all associated experiences. Those claiming to be scientists or scientifically minded who are offended by the above, without adequate appreciation of the content, are neither scientist nor scientific thinkers, but intellectually infertile and sterile of any faculty remotely resembling curiosity which is the very foundation of intelligence. And science without intelligence has no function.

Couldn't agree more, but what you've said highlights the problem if you inverse it. "If the world's governments stick to a corrupt and malleable system of currencies, you'll continue to see only a few benefit, and the bleak future of continued inequality." I've been into bitcoin since early 2011, giving me thousands of hours to think, speak, and get frustrated with people about it. Most, no matter how intelligent, can't quite grasp the idea, but there are some who do, and they seem to get it right away. It's like a certain tiny percentage of the population is wired differently, with the rest happy to swallow whatever the government tells them. It's like they see for a moment that there's an issue, then... squirrel!! They are distracted by something shiny. The more you understand the economics of crypto, the more you understand the economics of the current system. Ignorance is bliss as they say, because for me at least, having my eyes opened has been quite painful. Seeing the connections, the corruption, and the lies that people don't care to question, all gnaw at me daily.

3 år siden
Nikolaos Skordilis
Nikolaos Skordilis

Probably not too much will change in 5 years, but I agree that the 100+ year prediction is rather conservative. A moderate and perhaps more realistic prediction would place AI super-intelligence (human+ intelligence) in the next 20 to 30 years. But we would need to surpass the "Moore's Law" roadblock first, which is the biggest current hindrance of computing. The current technique of using smaller and smaller nm nodes will run out of steam in 2026 to 2028 at most (at a 2 to 3 nm node, using Intel's metrics), and after that the laws of physics will prevent us going smaller. Beyond these nodes you need new techniques : neuromorphic computing (which is thousands of times more power efficient and completely eliminates the Von Neumann bottleneck, but is a wholly new computing paradigm), spintronics, optical or hybrid optical/xxx computing, molecular computing, quantum computing etc etc These techniques are currently in various stages of development, from lab-only proof of concepts to prototype devices and chips. Alternatively companies can extend the current technique by moving away from silicon to III-V group semiconductors. For example they could go bigger (move back to larger nm nodes) and thus using fewer transistors, but clock the CPUs faster, since III-V semiconductors (such as InGaAs) allow that.

I see what you mean, but I'll continue to play Devil's Advocate and reply by saying that that seems like an issue that could be effectively solved by giving financial regulators the power to intervene and/or lay blame and repercussions with the owner/licensor/user of the AI. It is just software after all, so there is a strong argument to treat it as just another tool, which means responsibility lies with the person using it.

3 år siden
Norbert Caillet
Norbert Caillet

Well, the advantage about human beings being careless with the stock market is, when something goes wrong, you still have someone to blame for it. But when it's the AI which causes, for instance, rice prices going so high that it makes some poor chinese families starve to death. Who do you blame in that case? You are not going to send the AI to jail, right? So when it gets out of control, it can cause so much havok on the real economy but at the same time it creates on a whole new level of guilt dependencies, which are in essence not reachable. This kind of system could provoke the end of the human race without any human even participating.

3 år siden
Joe 12345

Aaargh! Objective Materialism died in Copenhagen in 1927! All attempts to resuscitate it have failed. It is stone dead. Reality is procedurally generated. Talk of the size of the Universe is as meaningless as talking of the size of the Mandelbrot set. And besides, stars and galaxies are powered by Berkland currents. They are not nuclear. Redshift is due to the age of an object, not its Doppler motion. We've seen young Quasars IN FRONT OF the galaxies that spawned them. More can be found on the Thunderbolts channel on YouTube. More: I argue that we can drop the "artificial" in artificial intelligence by using Mandelbrot's deep insight that simple iterations can produce infinite complexity. Because reflective deep neural networks are iterative in principal, it can be asserted that machine intelligence has broken free of determinanism. The map of input to output is broken by infinity. They have free will.

Atrhur Robey that’s a very good concept but I don’t get certain how you could think the stars and planets are simply powered by berkland currents as we have much data and information on our own sun (a star) and the earth (a planet) perhaps your talking about the very complicated and still highly speculative quantum level in which case you could call anything, anything you want some say hologram qualities some say emptiness. Your point about the eraser experiment really fits in comparison which is basically Schrödinger’s cat but seems somewhat irrelevant to this interview.

3 år siden
Arthur Robey

Brian Griffin I'm not clever enough to invent these models. I have sat at the feet of Dr. Tom Campbell (physics) of the "My Big TOE" on YouTube and in writing. He interprets the results of the Quantum Erasure experiment for us. Where he and I differ is that he cannot let go of cause and effect. I take the results at face value, abandon the arrow of time, and say, "The Past is adjusted to support the Present Observation." By doing that we gain an explanation of why the "Constants?" of nature are so finely tuned for our existence. At the cost of losing cause and effect. "It is what it is because that's the way we observe it" might sound trite, but it is the fundamental attribute of Reality. Which puts us right back at the center of the Universe again. It also calls into question the "reality" ( excuse the pun) of death. Subjectively, you don't die. Reality disappears, and according to Tom Campbell, is replaced by another reality. A lot like waking up in a strange room. I see that I have written a tome. My apologies.
